Shamus O'Meara Serves on Legislative School Safety Task Force, Co-authors Article With Former U.S. Attorney Tom Heffelfinger

Shamus O'Meara recently completed service on a legislative Advisory Task Force on School and Staff Emergency/All Hazards Preparedness.   Appointed by Minnesota Department of Education Commissioner Alice Seagren, Shamus served with other professionals in the security and safety community as well as representatives from the Departments of Education, Public Safety and Health.   The Task Force report, found on the Department of Education's website, http://children.state.mn.us, provides several recommendations to address safety and security in our schools.   Shamus and Task Force member Tom Heffelfinger, former U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota, testified before the Minnesota Senate on the Task Force and its recommendations.   They also co-authored an article, Partnering for School Safety, discussing important partnerships that have developed between law enforcement, school districts and education departments in this area.

Shamus and colleague Mark Azman represent the Red Lake and ROCORI school districts in school shooting incidents.  Shamus has presented on school safety and crisis management issues in several forums, and counsels clients in these areas.  He has worked with the Minnesota and U.S. Departments of Education, school districts, school boards associations, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Attorneys Office, FBI, Departments of Health and Public Safety, local law enforcement, school safety centers and national safety experts to promote safety awareness and crisis management in our schools and campuses.
